The Church in England has had a stake in education since the early days of Christianity. There are today Anglican schools, both Primary & Secondary, in all parts of the country. In January 1999 there were 4,500 Primary Schools and 198 Secondary Schools.  The Church of England is committed to promoting good quality education through its support of teachers, parents and governors by influencing all aspects of school life. Church of England schools fall into three categories; there are Voluntary Aided, Voluntary Controlled and Private Schools.

The Church of England considers the schools to be at the centre of the church’s mission. In Middleton and Elmer many of the children aged 4 to 11 attend the Bishop Tufnell Voluntary Aided Infant & Junior Schools. Members of St Nicholas Church are on the Governing Bodies of both Schools. The church and St Nicholas congregation support the schools financially and practically. Children from churchgoing families in this area may continue their education at an Anglican Secondary School in Chichester although places are very limited.
